Amazing little chain saw

- Reviewed in Canada on October 18, 2021Verified PurchaseI though about rating it 4/5 rather than a perfect 5 for the fact that, as many other reviews have pointed out, it leaks bar oil quite badly. I went with 5 because that’s normal of all electric chainsaws, not just if this model. At the end of the day, I’m using an electric saw in my overlanding rig because I’d rather not haul around oil and gas mixtures all the time and prefer the cleaner, lighter electric. It’s easy enough to deal with the leaking by either manually lubricating the chain or putting in the minimum just before each use.
In terms of power, I was pleasantly surprised at what this thing could chew through with relative ease - it has no problems getting through 9+ inch birch and my only other concern was battery power. I have yet to find the end if the battery and I’ve had to cut 3 days of firewood for camping, which I found to be very impressive.
The only small complaint I have is that the battery does seem to take a long time to charge but that’s probably to be expected given it’s impressive power and extensive life. There are other options like fast chargers that can be purchased or even spare batteries.
So if you’re in the market for an electric, know what to expect and you certainly won’t be let down by this impressive little rig, it certainly surpassed my expectations and even that of a few of my friends who are die hard gas saw fans. Also very reasonably priced and worth every penny!
- Reviewed in Canada on October 9, 2020Verified PurchaseChainsaw seems to have been a good buy. It is quite light and is more powerful than I expected it to be. It handles well in most situations and the battery lasts quite a while under full use. My only drawback is that the unit uses an enormous amount of chainsaw oil. Keep a bottle handy while you are using it for even a short period of time.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 26, 2024Verified PurchaseSmall enough for my wife to easily manipulate. Not too heavy with the battery installed. Quieter than expected. It hasn't been put through its paces yet, but initial tests are promising. Complete unit, plus battery and charger, but did not include oil, sold separately.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 15, 2024Verified PurchaseUsed it multiple this summer and I’m pleased. Great for yard work and handy to clean broken branches after a storm.

Out of the box it resembles a child's toy, which has me a bit nervous, but happy to say that it has impressive capabilities.
The battery lasts as long as the oil reservoir.
Overall happy with my purchase to this point.
I bought this for my wife as she operates a farm and sometimes needs to make a fence post or cut an obstacle and she has a hard time starting my gas powered saw.

Images in this review - Reviewed in Canada on October 24, 2021Verified PurchaseThis Black & Decker electric chainsaw is much easier and safer to use than a gas powered one. It is safer because the chain stops as soon as you take your finger off the trigger, and because it is so much lighter. It cuts very well, with lots of power. The battery does not last long if you are doing heavy duty work, but it is more than adequate for smaller jobs around an acreage. I love not having to pull-start a gas motor; it is a relief after decades of fighting with gas powered saws. The silence of its operation is also very welcome. The one improvement needed is to make the chain oil reservoir larger. Overall a great product and highly recommended.
- Reviewed in Canada on April 8, 2023Verified PurchaseI wanted this saw to work for precision fruit tree pruning, but it's like using a crude hand saw, compared to a fast, precision gas chainsaw. If you were stuck, this saw should work well for cutting firewood, or small pieces of wood. The problem is that it cuts crudely and bounces as it cuts. I believe this is because electric chainsaw chains don't spin fast, compared to a gas saw. This bouncing action causes this saw to rip through the tree bark when finishing, leaving a bark flap, causing an ugly wound that may not heal properly. This is bad for a fruit tree, and can cause infection.
So, don't buy an electric chainsaw for pruning fruit trees! Otherwise, it seems like a nice product.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 6, 2023Verified PurchaseSomewhat reluctant to leave the gas-powered world of hand tools, but this product exceeded expectations.
Great price, simple to use, lighter weight than gas and not as messy. The battery life was very good as well.
Only two minor downfalls is:
-Could not find in the specs whether a battery charger was included...!! Very frustrating, but indeed there is one. First charge took longer than expected, so give yourself a long overnight for the first go.
-Bar and Chain oil compartment is a little leaky, so store on newspaper or something absorbent (not much different from gas varieties actually).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great saw, buy with confidence
Verified PurchaseI have been very happily surprised at how well this saw performs. When it arrived and I pulled it out of the box I could tell by look on my wife's face that she was convinced I had wasted money on it. I was quick to tell her about all the five star reviews but I have to admit I certainly had my doubts as well. We have a couple of acres of woods to clean up with a lot of cedar, mostly dead and has been for quite a few years I would guess. I was planning using this saw for the small stuff and use my gas saw for all of the larger trees but this saw cuts so good and the batteries last so long I have been cutting a lot of fairly large timber. Cedar is very dense but this little saw does very well, not as fast as a gas saw of course but since it so light and very little vibration you can cut for quite a while and not get worn out. The only drawback to the saw is the lightweight though, the weight of a gas saw keeps the saw from jumping around and helps with the downward cutting action. I have several of the 40 volt B&D yard tools and am happy with all of them. This saw is a great buy

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect...highly recommended for an average homeowner
Verified PurchaseFirst of all, I am not an experienced chainsaw user, just a home owner with a 1/2 acre lot. That being said, I love this tool. It is amazingly handy and easy to use. Like most other reviewers, I find that it has more than enough power to handle the jobs I have to do. I don't see how any homeowner can go wrong with this chainsaw.
However, I do have one complaint. I have other tools in the B&D 40 volt lineup, and they came with their LCS36 fast charger. This tool came with their LCS436 charger, a much smaller and slower unit. For example, according to the manual that came with this chainsaw, the LCS36 (or similar LCS40) charger will fully charge a 2 amp-hour battery in 1.5 hours, whereas the LCS436 takes 5 hours for the same job. I think B&D and/or Amazon should plainly state which charger is included with each tool. BTW, according to the manual, it is safe to leave the battery connected to any of these chargers without danger of over-charging.
Amazon sells replacement chains (at this time) for a reasonable $13 and change. But replacement batteries are absurdly priced...you might as well by a whole new tool, and that goes for any of their 40 volt tools. And I don't know if you can even buy a replacement bar for this chainsaw if you needed it...again, you might be better off buying a whole new tool and battery.
For the record, I also own B&D's 40 volt "sweeper" (a light duty blower), the string trimmer, and the hedge trimmer, and I'm happy with all of them. Just remember that, if you need a LOT of power, there's no substitute for a gas-powered tool.
[Edit 9/12/17] Wow, I'm so glad I had this for cleanup after Hurricane Irma in Jacksonville. It saved me incalculable work. Rarely have I been so happy with a product. Note that most of my cutting was pretty light duty, so I can't speak of its ability to handle heavy loads, but I would have been worn out cutting all those limbs and branches by hand.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good chain saw withing its limits.
Verified PurchaseOne thing I have to say right off is that this will not replace a gas chain saw. For bigger jobs, only a gas chain saw has the power and fuel capacity to complete a full-size tree felling and cutting up.
Having said that, this is an excellent saw for smaller jobs and I just love its ease of use. In my late 50s, I don't enjoy the fight to start a gas chain saw and this electric model is just fantastic! There's little vibration and little noise compared to a gas model. You slap the battery in and go! No fuss and no pulling the starter handle X times until start on a gas model. It's a joy to use.
AS you can see from the pics, I had a standing tree of about 10" which was probably a little bigger than I should have used it on, but this was a test after all. The second pic shows the tree lying on the ground. As you can see from the third pic, there was some leakage of oil over time I never really noticed until I looked down at my pants! The next two pics show the number of drums I cut on one battery charge while the last shows the diameter of the cuts I was making.
The battery life was actually good considering the thickness of the tree it had to saw through and I got the hardest part done. The battery is the real constraint and wish I had bought another, but they're like $50 a piece! If my first project had been a smaller tree, it probably would have finished it. But, frankly, I would have liked to have another battery.
I got a late start in the day so, by the time the battery was charged, it was getting on in the evening and I didn't finish it. I'll finish tomorrow. How does it cut? Very well, but when it bogs down due to too much pressure by me, it just quits. You just have to back off a little, start it again, and go slower. I was disappointed by how much it cut just at the same time I was impressed by how much it cut. It clearly isn't a replacement for my 18" Stihl gas powered saw, but it sure reduces the number of occasions I'll have to reach for it on the wall of the garage!
One thing I need to point out is that it does not have a chain brake. What looks like a chain brake is just a hand guard. You do have to push a button on top the handle before you can pull the throttle trigger as a safety feature. Also, it uses bar and chain oil rather quickly due to the small size of the reservoir and the small amount of leakage.
Adjusting or tightening the chain is very easy. It's very easy to turn the retainer screw assembly and then turn the adjustment wheel to move the bar in and out to tighten and loosen the chain tension. Be sure to check that frequently just as you would a gas model. Always use eye protection, by the way!
On the whole, I'm happy with this chain saw so far. If you have the money, get a second battery! It's a good choice for small jobs and as a companion to a gas model for a second person to cut branches off or clean up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great on smaller trees and branches!
Verified PurchaseWe had a diseased peach tree in our yard that needed to be cut down. So, I bought this 40v chainsaw hoping that it would be powerful enough. The trunk was around 7" in diameter.
I am happy to say that this light, easy-to-use chainsaw was up for the task with power and battery to spare. I stalled it a couple of times by trying to force the cut, however, when I let off and used less pressure it worked great!
Light, powerful enough, easy to use, and cut the stump almost flush with the ground.
NOTE: You will need to add some bar and chain oil to the chainsaw before using it. It does not come with the oil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Saw! Lightweight with more than enough power!
Verified PurchaseI waited a few months before writing this review because I find that reviews within a few days of the item being brand new don't always tell the whole tale. As I write this I have probably used this Chainsaw at least 20 times. I have cut down mesquite tree's and other brush type tree's with diameters as large 15 inches. This little saw works much larger than it's size! There is a little trick to getting through the bigger tree's because of it's power but you will figure it out very quickly. The thing I like the most about the saw is it's light weight. I've owned three other gas powered saws and used one recently on a bigger tree and I could not believe how heavy that saw felt after using the Black and Decker saw for the last few months. This saw will be perfect for camping. Light, powerful (enough), and the battery lasts for about an hours worth of cutting. I was so happy with the saw that I bought the Black and Decker trimmer to go with it. I needed a trimmer and I figured having an extra 40 volt battery to use for both would make the jobs even easier. The trimmer also far exceeded my expectations and I posted a review on that product as well. Bottom line, great saw for the money and if you need something bigger than this you probably haven't even considered an electric saw anyway.
