Crazy, Cracked, Warm, and Deep Paperback – Jan. 21 2022
"When I was dealing with cancer, I wrote to wrestle with the gods about fairness. When I was dealing with nightmares and memories, I used prose to share the pain that was trapped in my cells. When I am holding a space in a circle for peoples' stories that are not mine to share, I write to find my heart, clear my mind, so I can stay present and connect with their world, not stay stuck in mine."
So says Susan Clarke in this sensitive and moving memoir about her commitment to herself to find a way through and out of an internal prison built by the aftermath of severe childhood trauma. While each brick was placed by a part of her with the goal of keeping her safe in an unpredictable world, the separation was so deeply at odds with Susan's genuine caring and natural need for connection to herself and others that the walls themselves became untenable pain points, leading to more walls and a labyrinth. With a seemingly indomitable will, and against all reasonable odds, Susan's journey is not just to physical health, but to a place of wholeness and inclusion that makes room for everything, full-on living without borders or walls.
Crazy, Cracked, Warm, and Deep is a stirring history, tenderly told. It is also a primer on how to locate and remember the broken and separated parts in each of us, clearing the pain "so the dark spots get the needed light to live forward." In an age of growing societal estrangement and distrust, Crazy, Cracked, Warm, and Deep lights a path for a way forward, not only to our true selves but also to our community connection.
"Choose to live. Choose to be curious. Fearlessly or fearfully face whatever is in front of you. Do not step away from chaos, conflict, and uncertainty. Instead, step in and reap the magic and the miracles."

- Reviewed in Canada on March 8, 2022The thing I love most about this book is the way it honours the author in her entirety. The writing is variously blunt, poetic, shocking, nourishing and inspiring. She makes it okay to own what she thinks, remembers and believes, regardless of how it might appear. This book is about standing forth in both strength and vulnerability. Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend for anyone healing from childhood trauma
Verified PurchaseI picked up this book at bedtime intending to read a few pages at the end of a long day. 2 1/2 hours later I turned out the light after finishing the last page. I couldn't make myself put this compelling book down. I feel deeply honored to be let into the author's world. Ms. Clarke's courage, vulnerability, and unique way of telling her story...unveiling trauma, but also the hope and the healing that transpired in her life...was heart opening for me and reorganized some of the ways I have thought about healing from trauma and what is possible. I handed this book to my husband to read and plan to purchase this for friends who I know will also be deeply impacted.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Honest and Hopeful Book
Verified PurchaseSusan‘s story is so compelling I had a hard time putting this book down after I started it. The painful abuse she suffered in childhood made my heart hurt. And, she managed to share the story of the pain from her childhood with authenticity, vulnerability, and hope for all who experienced similar childhood trauma.
The story of her miraculous healing from stage four cancer is another part of the plot that has will inspire all who read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This story is about determination, resilience and inspiration in the face of extreme trauma.
Verified PurchaseI read this book in one night - got totally into it and couldn’t put it down. It’s a life story about grit, determination, resilience and transformation even in the face of extreme childhood trauma, injustice and cancer. It’s a deeply inspiring book and gave me perspective in ways that I couldn’t have expected. Susan Clarke’s story is a testament to the idea that everything we go through defines the person we are destined to be. Such a gift for anyone who reads it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful memoir AND beautiful poetry
Verified PurchaseSusan approaches her stories from so many angles and feelings. It’s empowering to see more and more people continue to share the realities of their traumas, and to reflect on the process of putting them into writing.
Susan is also a FABULOUS poet, which was a pleasant surprise throughout the book. In fact, I hope she publishes more poetry! Seems to match her feelings on “fractals”
