Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it's unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it's peak functionality.

  • SHARPENING: Use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures.
  • CLEANING: Open and close the blades in warm water several times. When they have dried it is recommended to apply a small drop of oil between the blade, tool shank and the spring or locking mechanism.
  • WARNING: Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.
  • RECOMMENDATION: Swiss Army Knife Oil (Item No.4.3301). FEATURES: (1) neutral odor and taste, (2) highly resistant to aging, (3) good wear and corrosion protection qualities, and (4) Food safe

    Own a whole bunch of knives ranging from $550 titanium billet super knives to a $10 antique store find. Victorinox knives have always been and probably will always be my favorite to use on a daily basis. The blade steel takes a razor edge, it is easy to sharpen, the tools are so useful you begin to resent carrying other knives, and the form factor is great.

    This one is a little chonkier than my other Swiss Army Knives (SAK's), so keep that in mind - it comes with some comfortable scales but it is a little girthier due to the design. The blade also has a little more belly, which some may find preferable to the typical Victorinox offering.

    Overall a great little knife (like all SAK's) that I will be carrying for the foreseeable future.

    The Evolution model 14 combines the best components of the Wenger line of Swiss Army Knives with those of the Victorinox.

    Wenger based implements include:

    -The lever actuated scissors that use a dedicated back spring (rather than the thin leaf spring used by the Victorinox).
    -A screwdriver/ bottle opener that locks securely in the fully open position by applying slight pressure toward the screw while turning it.
    -Nail file blade that faces the abrasive section away from the other tools (avoiding damage to the cutting blade).
    -Key ring attachment point is an extension of one of the back springs (stronger than the thin separate spacer)

    Victorinox based implements include:
    -Can opener with fine screwdriver that can also be used for some Philips type screws.
    -Cork screw that can carry the small Victorinox eye glass screwdriver (available separately on Amazon).
    -Awl/reamer useful for boring
    -Tweezers and toothpick that can be more easily replaced if lost (standard Victorinox parts, also available on Amazon).

    The handle is well shaped 84mm length. I find the slightly wider handle to be an improvement for me. A great knife to carry for practical uses around the home, shop, or office.
