This book has been extremely helpful in preparation for hiking the AT. It really puts into perspective the consideration you need to make and highlights a process of 3 piles to lighten your load. Tons of ideas to streamline while making sure you have what you really need. Thanks Steve for putting this together.
Also of note, had a couple of questions from reading the book and the author included an email. He responded quickly and answered them! such service!

Purchase options and add-ons
A Backpacker's Guide to Making Every Ounce Count was written by an avid outdoorsman, for the beginner backpacker and hiker. Also, for those interested in knowing what a Gram Weenie is and how we think. If you are interested in lightening your pack a few ounces at a time, this book covers that very subject. Steven discusses how he used to pack for a trip and how he soon realized that there had to be a lighter way to backpack.
A Backpacker's Guide to Making Every Ounce Count offers tips that may allow you to approach your pack from a different point of view, like cutting the tags from your clothes and cutting your toothbrush in half--all in the name of shaving a few ounces of weight.
When planning a trip, you need to look at your gear and ask questions like, "How many ounces can I shave from this item?" This book offers some ideas on how to lighten a few ounces from any pack, reduce the weight on your Big Three, and help you define just what type of backpacker you are--a lightweight or an ultra-lightweight backpacker.
Remember this, there are sixteen ounces in a pound. If you can shave four ounces from four areas in your pack, you just shaved one pound from your pack. Every ounce truly does count.

3.0 out of 5 stars Author makes the simple complicated
Verified PurchaseNot my favorite perhaps because of the writing style. It is mostly about summer backpacking in the East such as along the AT. My impression is too little useful information taking too much space. I quit reading after a few sections, browsed the rest and not having learned anything new moved on. The author mentions weighing his gear in ounces. That is too coarse for me. I measure in grams. If either of two items do the job and one is a few grams lighter maybe its the right choice.
The author attempts to be scientific but sometimes misses the mark such as suggesting the myth that wearing clothing in your sleeping bag makes you colder. This is demonstrably false if you are wearing dry clothing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight?
Verified PurchaseMost people consider a baseweight of 10-20 lbs to be lightweight. The author defines lightweight to be 20-30 lbs. His pack + hammock+ sleeping system alone weigh over 11 lbs. While the author has some good ideas, he just carrieds too much stuff.
