- Reviewed in Canada on September 18, 2021Style: 22xVerified PurchasePerfect! Exactly what we needed. Glad we purchased this unit and not a Chinese knock-off. This one is more expensive, but this is a well spent money. Most of the cost goes into a well honed software.
The software is good. It performs as expected. At least for what we need. i.e: waypoints, tracks and area calculation.
We use it as a track recording device and then we import the recordings and process them on a PC. We also prepare tracks on the PC, import them in the device and march them once in the field. The ability to see our current position relative to a programmed track is nice. The screen is a bit small for my aging eyes. This is not a product issue. We understand that something to be used during hiking must be small and light. Bigger is not better. Beside that a bigger screen would be very taxing on the batteries.
We used the device for a few hours and the two AA alkaline batteries are still full.
The color LCD screen is transflectif giving an excellent readability in full sun (which requires less back light which in turn requires less energy, hence more autonomy to the batteries).
The manufacturer states an accuracy of 4 meters. When we stand still for an extended period of time, we can see our position randomly jumping around a point. Given enough time, it is possible to assume that the average position is quite accurate. For our needs, 4 meters is enough.
Overall it is an excellent product. We did not test all functions.
- Reviewed in Canada on October 21, 2024Style: 32xVerified PurchaseScreen is a bit small good features, it did took a while to understand the capabilities of the 32X.
- Reviewed in Canada on March 2, 2024Style: 32xVerified PurchaseI was looking for a handheld gps unit that wouldn't break the bank to take out hiking and after doing some research I decided to go with the Etrex 32x mainly because you can download custom maps for the unit which I have found to be very helpful as the standard garmin topo map is a bit lacking in detail. The added barometric altimeter is also a cool feature but was more of a bonus than a major selling point. In addition to the unit I also bought the optional garmin carabiner clip back and some screen protectors and have been very happy with it so far.

- Reviewed in Canada on July 28, 2021Style: 32xVerified PurchaseNeither Garmin BaseCamp or Garmin Express work with the eTrex 32x on my Windows 10 PC. They're supposed to, and they connect to the GPS, but they don't work.
Garmin Express connects to the GPS, identies it as an eTrex 32x, and says it does not support this device and to use Garmin Map Updater instead. It's stated in 2 places on the Garmin website that Garmin Express supports the eTrex 32x.
I tried Garmin Map Updater and it says it's unable to connect to the internet (and I tried disabling all anti-virus and firewall).
Then I found and tried Garmin Web Updater, which is what Garmin BaseCamp launches to update the device software. It connects to the GPS, downloads the new software from the internet for it, but chokes saying the update file is corrupted.
Garmin BaseCamp connects to the GPS but says it cannot transfer waypoints or routes to it as the GPS does not support them (it does) or BaseCamp needs to be upgraded (and it's at the latest version and development of it stopped in 2018).
With some research and more effort, there are third party solutions that work for maps/waypoints/routes, but Garmin really needs to take support of their apps on Windows 10 more seriously.
So far the device itself is excellent, but all these difficulties in downloading to it reduce its overall usability.
- Reviewed in Canada on September 6, 2022Style: 22xVerified PurchaseAs my last Garmin handheld was bought 15 years ago, I was curious how different the new one was. Size is about the same, buttons likewise. The speed and refresh rate though is off the charts by comparison. With the MicroSD, the on board map download meant that more sites, places and points of interest are available. The tracking feature, and the ability to save them, is more enhanced. Use and saving of waypoints is simpler. In conclusion, a very worthwhile purchase.
