Excellent tracker but a few caveats you should understand

Excellent tracker but a few caveats you should understand
This tracker seems to be one of the better, if not the best available. However, it does have some caveats which are not too clear from the documentation and I think it helps to understand how the technology in the tracker works to avoid frustration, which I'll attempt to explain:The tracker uses GPS for positioning information and cellular connectivity to send said positioning data to the Tractive platform to be viewed in the phone app. Both of these technologies have a high power requirement which can drain a battery quickly. The only ways to keep the battery from draining too quickly are: a bigger battery, disable the GPS and/or cellular connection, or use the GPS and/or cellular connection sparingly. If you simply design the device with a larger battery it will become too bulky for smaller animals so Tractive have tried to strike a balance between all of the methods I mentioned.Battery savingThe most aggressive battery saving mode the tracker has is called Power Saving Zone. Essentially, if you are at home and the tracker can detect your home wifi network then it goes into a 'deep sleep' mode. This conserves the battery really well. I see around a 1% loss every 8 hours when my dog is at home. When you leave the Power Saving Zone the tracker works in its 'normal mode' which appears to only send positioning updates every 3 minutes or so. This is pretty good on the battery and I see around a 5% loss over 30 minutes but is not particularly accurate especially if your dog can run fast.Live modeIf you need to track your dog very accurately you activate 'Live mode' from the app. This forces the tracker to send updates every 2-3 seconds which under good conditions will be accurate to a few metres. The downside is that Live mode drains the battery quite quickly. In order to stop it completely draining the battery Live mode will only be active for 5 minutes (default, can be changed to 15, 30 or 60 minutes). On average I lose almost 1% battery per minute in Live mode. These modes are how Tractive have managed to keep the size and weigh of the tracker down. I believe there are larger models available which claim to have much longer battery life and are intended for larger dogs. The only difference between these different models is, I'd imagine, the size of the battery.RadarIf you are within Bluetooth range of your pet you can use the Radar function to accurately pinpoint them. In an open area you might get 50 metres or so range but this will dramatically decrease inside buildings, under sheds, cars etc. This feature uses virtually no battery at all.Privacy/data protectionTractive is a company based in Austria and being part of the EU are bound by reasonably strict data protection laws such as GDPR. They have a properly written out privacy policy which clearly states that they never sell your data to third parties but do store your data with third parties (Google Firebase etc) to provide the service. All standard stuff. There are plenty of Chinese trackers available with dubious or non-existent privacy policies. Remember that these devices know where you live, where your regular walks are, and if you give them all of the optional info, what potentially expensive rare breed you have.My opinionThe Power Saving Zone is a good idea and works great while I am at home. But if you have a large garden where your pet likes to hide and the tracker can still detect your home wifi then you are limited to Radar mode only.Don't expect perfect tracking while you go on your daily walks unless you put it into Live mode every time. See my screenshot for an example of the level of detail on tracking in normal mode. The radar doesn't seem to work quite how I would expect. Basically, you have these rings that fill up the closer you get to the tracker but I never seem to be able to get more than two rings even with my phone touching the tracker (there are 4 rings in total). The light is useless and the sound option may be useful if you can train your pet to recall when they hear it.The clip design along with the charger could be much better. It has a detachable rubber clip which goes around the collar and fastens to each side of the tracker. I would much prefer the collar to be able to thread through the body of the tracker. That said, the tracker has not fallen off yet. The charging cradle means that the tracker must be detached from the collar to charge. I think it would be much easier to remove the collar from the pet and connect the charger instead of having to also remove the tracker.I have it on a roughly 9kg dog and he doesn't mind it at all, but I think it would be intrusive on a dog a kg or two less. There is a 'Virtual fence' mode which sends an alert to your phone if your dog leaves a specified area. I have not used this feature. The app has a social media/Strava style leader board thing which is on by default. It doesn't seem to share too much information but be aware that other users of the app can see some info about you.I wont comment on the subscription plans as I think they are largely personal preference. Be aware that when you set up the app you will be presented with 3 options but there are more options within each. There is a Home Assistant integration available which works really well. Now I can automatically control heating/cooling if I have to leave my dog alone.

This tracker is absolutely fantastic. It’s small it’s light it fixes really securely onto the collar. It works amazingly and it’s dead easy to recharge. battery length is good, I haven’t got a bad word to say about it. I tried a different brand before which completely failed because there was no reception, but I’ve had no issues at all with this one. It’s been brilliant. At the end of the day it’s peace of mind and it’s accurate and reliable, which is what you want.

Just to say, I'm a self confessed tech geek! One of the reasons my dog is wearing one of these!
Right from the outset, this is a superbly designed product.

The unit and charger have been very well thought out.
To attach the tracker to your pets collar, you wrap two strong bands around it, and then the device not going anywhere.
It's sleek, tough, waterproof, and doesn't irritate my dog, at all.
The charger is genius! It's designed in such a way that you can charge the device without even taking it off the collar. The unit clips in to the charger very simply, and a light shows you the status of charge.

All of this hardware would be no use unless the app was any good, and this is where the whole set up comes together. It is absolutly brilliant!
Using a Google maps view, you can see exactly where your pet currently is, and has been for a given period of time.
This is clearly layed over the map, and shows up as a highlighted path, which I use to see where my dog walker has taken my boy while I'm at work!

Right from the outset, you get to set one of the most brilliant features the app has - the 'Power Saving Zone'
When your pet is in this area, the unit stops connecting to the satellites, and connects to your homes WiFi, to save battery.
Not only does this significantly increase the life of the battery (easily 10 days between charges) but you also get a notification when your pet leaves, and re enters this 'virtual fence'.
As well as the movement of your fury child, it also tracks their activity, sleep, and adds them to a league where you can see their activity based on other users pets, based on their breed, local area, or globally, which is great fun to take part in.

I could go on, but put simply, this is an amazing device for having on your pet.
For around £5 a month, I think its money well spent.
I could not recommend this tracker enough, and a huge congratulations to the creators of a truly brilliant product, combining hardware and sortware in one of the best ways I've seen for a long time.

The peace of mind of having this makes it completely worth it. Fortunately never had to rely on it in an emergency, but have never had issues with cellular coverage, even up mountains. The battery can drain very quickly if you're out all day so always keep the charger handy. The fence alerts are faultless and are much better than they used to be. To get the most of the battery, definitely set up a WiFi power saving zone. It basically puts the tracker to sleep when it can detect your home's WiFi network, and wakes back up as soon as it loses it.

Only downside is the size - our medium-sized dog fits this perfectly on her collar but I can see it being a bit big on smaller dogs.

Reviewed in Mexico on 9 November 2024

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tracker For the Price

On my second year of using this tracker for my two female hound dogs.

I live in a rural area on the edge of a national forest. My two dogs have a penchant for running off on little "adventures" that take them miles and miles from our home. They always come back but there are hunters, ranchers with cattle, a moderately busy scenic highway nearby, coyotes, etc. etc -- plenty of hazards.

I got the tracker so that I could go out and run the little rascals down and retrieve them when they take one of these jaunts and it has worked well for that. If I can get within 500 - 1000 feet of them and whistle they will come right to me, with a "Gee, you're out here too? You should have come with us, it was great!" look on their faces.

The only slight drawback is that the tracking is dependent on 1) cell phone coverage and 2) GPS reception. Since our area is remote, mountainous and heavily forested both of these can be spotty or even non-existent depending on where the dogs are. The result is that they drop off the map for some period of time and then re-appear when the tracker gets in range of a cell signal and/or GPS. This coupled with the sparse road network means that it can take some time to run them down but over the last two years I have managed to run them down every time they have taken off. Sometimes it takes an hour or two but that is not the fault of the unit --- it's the environment I live in.

I've found that the location the unit gives is very accurate. Live mode works very well if you have a strong enough cell/GPS signal.

The unit has saved me a lot of worrying and fretting. Before I got it I would have no idea at all where they were and I would just have wait (and hope) they would not get into trouble and would find their way back. BTW, these two must have a biological GPS built into them because after I got the tracker I found that they would go up to 5 miles away and cover a track of 15 miles or so in just a few hours! With the unit I can know, with assurance, that (for instance) "Oh, they're running down the power line right of way to the lake, no big deal" or "They're over at the Smith's ranch, probably chasing calves so I better get them".

So now, if I worry, at least it's more informed worrying! : >

The unit seems to be durable and waterproof. This is my second year with it and it's holding up well. My dogs come back covered in mud, water, cockleburrs, etc. The unit is scratched up a bit but otherwise no worse for the wear.

Battery life is very good. In our wifi power saving zone the battery would probably last up to a week (guessing). Out of the power saving zone and with a lot of live mode tracking I would estimate that battery life would be 1 -2 days. Can't really say for sure because I charge the unit every night, just in case.

My dogs are getting a bit older now and are less adventurous; this unit helped me get them through their adolescence and was certainly worth every penny for the unit and subscription!

I can’t believe this thing was only $35 and service is $13 or less per month. This device is exactly what I was looking for for my adventurous teenage (10 mo) vizsla girl. My 3 yo boy has always been reliable about staying within an approved range of my semi-rural, fenceless house, and I’d hoped my little female would just stick with him. Turns out she’s a bit more adventurous and has even emboldened him to venture farther and not check in as often as he’s accustomed to. Recently, although they’re welcome at my one neighbor’s yard they now go to on their own to play with her dog, little Wren has been seen too many times venturing out into the increasingly busy road off her fenceless yard. With this tracker, I’m now able to set up ranges on my property I’m comfortable with them roaming on their own, and I get alerts whenever they go too far towards the busy road, cross into unapproved neighboring properties, or even go to visit the approved neighbor. Now I can retrieve Wren without my neighbor having to ask or give her rides home, or I can at least go supervise that they stay within the safe boundaries of her yard. I no longer have to wonder what they’re up to or that they’re staying on my land (which I’m finding out they usually are; good doggies). I can focus on my work, and they don’t have to be fenced or tethered and can just be dogs doing their doggy things together. I also worried about them constantly this spring as the ice on the lake was thawing. I can’t watch them all the time or keep them locked up inside the whole time, but I knew they were going way out onto the thinning ice. I was so worried they’d fall in. Now I have safe alert boundaries set up that I can turn on in the spring and off the rest of the year that will alert me if they go onto the ice.

The tracker is so accurate to such a small range, it’s fascinating to check in on them and view the history of her movements. She’s busy (see scribbly photo of zoomed in movements with heat spots where she spent more time)! However, as other reviewers have pointed out, the smallest virtual fence range is indeed larger than the average urban yard, so I think it will not be what you’re looking for if you live in town and want to know if your dog goes just next door.

I wasn’t sure how well it would work at my friend’s property when he watched them for the day, as he lives further up in the mountains with not great cell coverage (first picture), but it worked a treat all day. I kept checking in on her (for fun) throughout the day when I was away in another city, and was amused to see where all she went around his property.

I’m also finding the battery to be long lasting, whether they spend the day in or out of my Wi-Fi range. I don’t usually have need to turn on live tracking, which it says can cause the battery to drain more quickly. I have used it a couple times, but only for a minute or so. It works well and i didn’t notice the battery draining suddenly or anything. I charge my cell phone every day just as a matter of course. I was prepared to do the same with the tracker, but I’m finding I only actually need to charge it about once per week.

It seems to be very durable too. I’m not sure if she’s dunked it yet, but I know she and her brother have splashed around in the creek with it. She’s also not used to wearing her harness full time now, so she’s tried rubbing it off against things, without success. It has a couple scratches on it now, but hasn’t phased it. It’s super easy for me to get it off and on the harness (for charging), but so far it’s stayed put despite her best efforts. A+

I did find it took a little poking around to get to the $13/monthly offer in the app (which itself I found to be simple enough to set up), but when I saw that you get a 30-day free trial if you sign up for the longer options anyway, that was good enough for me and so I went for the yearly subscription which is the better value. And it turned out I was super pleased with the service right away and will be very happy to keep it now.

I really love this tracker. It’s such an excellent value for what they provide and for me personally the peace of mind is priceless.

Me ha ayudado a cuidar a mi mascota, me costó un poco establecer la zona wifi, pero aparte de eso ha funcionado perfecto, cada que salimos de la valla virtual me avisa inmediatamente y sigue su ubicación en tiempo real.
