How To Train Your Dog

Get your dog used to the ramp

Before using the dog ramp on the car, you should get your dog used to the ramp. Lay the ramp flat on the ground and guide your dog over the ramp a few times. Your dog should not run or jump over the side of the ramp. Reward your dog with treats and praise.

Fold out ramp

The telescopic ramp can be extended up to 221 cm and therefore fits most vehicle sizes. The plastic nubs on the bottom of the ramp give the ramp a good grip on the ground and ensure more safety.

Guide your dog into the car

The first few times your dog uses the ramp on the car should be guided by the leash. Once your dog gets used to the ramp, he can run up and down the ramp independently. Praise and treats are also the best partner in this step.

It's sturdy and durable, and my large dog can use it easily. A very sturdy piece of kit that easily bears my slightly overweight, elderly Lab, Prince. It took a few tries and half a box of treats, for him to get the gist of it, and he seems quite happy with it now. The ramp slides apart easily, so best to mind your fingers and toes when you undo the small retaining strap and a good idea to always use the strap to secure it all before you try picking it up. It fits nicely in the rear seat footwell of my car, but I do place a cover over it to stop any muck/water dripping on the floor or seats. Somebody pointed out that the walking surface is fairly rough and can scratch the inside of the car, but having a cover (old blanket) over it stops that. The surface is rough, but it has very good grip, sands down the dogs claws without damage to his pads and is useful for striking matches for our camping stove. Wonderful idea although the dog wasn't too keen on it at first. I did as the instruction leaflet suggests and laid it flat for him to get used to it, then propped it on the sofa (I don't have a car but a friend takes me to and from the vet when needed). He took some coaxing but after about 10 minutes he did walk up most of it. I am pushed for space in my flat so there weren't many options for testing it. He wasn't so clever at coming down it, tending to jump off half way down when fully extended. He is a bearded collie, and a bright dog, dog training was a doddle. As he's having an operation and mustn't jump on and off things I thought the ramp would help - there is no way I can lift his 30kg from car to ground and vice versa. Hopefully he'll still be dopey from anaesthetic and easy to persuade to go up and down the ramp just to get home. The so called safety strap which does its job well is a plastic piece, not very long, attached to the body of the ramp with a screw and washer. Its a bit of a palaver to have to screw and unscrew each time the ramp is transported/carried, I think the design could have been improved. But it is a good ramp, no hint of unsteadiness (which would have freaked out my boy) and it has non-slip surface to walk on. My dog was happier when I covered that with a folded up throw. If you have done agility training with your dog its no worse than an "A" frame and not so steep. Good value for money I think. Update: I put ordinary door mats on the ramp instead of the throw, and he walked up it and down it like he'd been doing it all his life. He's not keen on the nonslip surface though. Best thing about this ramp is it is so lightweight to carry. A really good investment. Downside: it has a peculiar smell which I presume comes from the non-slip surface. Hopefully that will wear off in time. This has been a great ramp to use in conjunction with the grooming table, and the more we've used it the better the dog has been at going up and coming down.

We have a Land Rover so needed something long enough for our GSD to be able to climb in and out without the ramp being too steep. This ramp is really good, but you need to take some time to think through how you are going to use it. It is quite long, even when collapsed, so if you intend to store it on the back seat, make sure the car is wide enough and also make sure you are going to be able to park somewhere where another car can't block you in at the side. My partner managed to raise the dog guard that sits just below the backseat headrest level just a couple of inches, so that we could put the cardboard box it came in, upright, against one side, held in place by a strap and the car boot liner. He then put a narrow piece of lino along the bottom of the box to help with sliding the ramp in and out easily. I am 5'1" and with two or three practices I managed to slide the ramp in and out of the box and set it up without any problems. One thing to note - make sure you fasten the clip each time after you have used it or it will have your fingers. This product has been such a help. It is sturdy and fairly easy to use and it only took a couple of goes before our GSD got used to it. He loves it now and thinks it is a game. He weighs 43kg so without it I would never have been able to get him to his physio or hydrotherapy sessions. Would thoroughly recommend, but would emphasise the need to practice with it, before you have to use it properly for the first time.

Tried a few others and this is the best. We have 3 dogs all weighing at least 34Kg through to 44 kg so this is very sturdy with non slip surface that is perfect for the dogs and gives them confidence. They will even walk up on their own !! The item is a little heavier than some and in a small car your may have some storage issues but we have a Ford Ranger and it fits perfectly. Just be mindful when opening that you don’t catch your fingers as it could cause some cuts and bruises. Not an issue if your careful. Would recommend especially to all large dog owners. Enjoy !
