Nice quality & attractive little compost bin. Instructions could be a little better and could be a few more pilot holes but easy enough to build. Think I'll give it a coat of paint as I'm sure the treated timber isn't that well preserved. Looks so much better than those ugly plastic compost bins & I'm sure it will make a home for a load of insects & grubs as an added bonus. Though it is pricey for a few slats of timber!

To compost or not to compost? Having read the reviews decided this was for us. One reviewer had said they had painted theirs off white and resembled a beehive, we have followed suit. (1L tin of cuprinol Pale Jasmine). Compost bin centre right of our garden, facing the sun in plain view from the house. Easy to put together and light for two people to carry so it doesn't fall apart when lifted.(mostly slots together and held by gravity.) Wood quality is OK ish, I don't think it would last many years without a coat of preserve. Took advice from other reviewer to make hinges more secure as small screws. I did it by by adding some extras I had spare. Small bolts through the holes would have been a better design. However the lid is easy to lift on and off if you don't want to bother with them at all. There are gaps in between the slats that will let small chopped vegetation out, ie grass cuttings. Ideal for aeration, but perhaps not everyone's choice. Maybe a liner could be added? Mesh?
Overall we're pleased. This is our first time composting. If it doesn't work for us or we can't be bothered, we're left with a pleasant feature store box for pots, tools etc.
Yes, an expensive compost bin particularly costing the additions. If you want to do serious compsting, prehaps another product would be better, but this is perfect for our needs.
It's about 2 1/2 foot wide and just under 3 foot high. Or 75cm wide 85cm high.

This is a nice looking addition to the garden which every visitor comments on. It has produced very good compost once I learned the proper ratios and put enough browns in. Had it for nearly three years now and very pleased with it for the price. One of the lids hinges broke off at a weak spot on the wood, but was easy to fix. Can thoroughly recommend this, but sadly I am now abandoning this method of composting for a sealed composter as the open nature of this one finally attracted a family of rats. I will empty the wooden composter but leave it in place for storage as it looks so nice. Will hide away an ugly rat proof compost bin elsewhere in the garden.

My 9 year old son and I made this in an afternoon. He's a lego expert (therefore good at building with instructions) and I'm a rubbish DIY-er ! Between the two of us we managed to get it all up and running in a couple of hours, but a competent person could probably do it in half the time. It generally slots together in a bee hive fashion and then you do need an electric screwdriver to get the final (important, supplied) screws in properly as the wood is too hard to do this manually, I found anyway. The instructions supplied were really basic and not very helpful or clear, but if we can do it without their help, so can you. I'm delighted with the capacity of the compost bin which is more than enough for a small garden and it looks absolutely lovely. I've had lots of positive comments from visitors and rather than hiding away my compost bin, its pride of place amongst my wooden planters. Its not done a winter yet, so I can't comment on its hardiness in all weathers, but I'm confident that it will withstand several years. Its not cheap, but you really do get what you pay for, and this is no exception. Highly recommend.

My husband and I moved from a house with a 130-foot long garden to a new build with a much smaller garden almost six years ago, and since moving I have felt unable to compost as there is no space in our new garden to tuck an unsightly compost bin away in. As a result, I was really excited to see this beehive-shaped one as it looks good and doesn't need to be hidden! It took me very little time to put together (most of it just slots together, with a few screws needed for assembling and attaching the roof), and it looks lovely in my garden. I have varnished the top and painted the sides an off-white to make it look as much like a real beehive as possible. One little tip - don't do what I did and paint the little 'latch' at the bottom! I stupidly assembled it and painted over it and now I can't move it! It doesn't matter as I can just slide the bottom panel out - but I was annoyed with myself when I realised what I had done!

Biggest issue is it is very slow, more than a year in and still compost isn't ready. Smaller stuff you put it tends to poke out through the slats especially plant stalks. Easy enough to build but hard to move as it tends to disassemble , so build it at or close to siting position. Roof opening prop quite week, broke after a few months.

Attractive compost heap that was easy to assemble but did not seem very sturdy. I therefore treated with wood preservative before painting which was quite a lot of work but enhanced the design. In summary this is a pretty compost heap rather than a particularly practical one. There are quite big gaps between the slats so smaller things will fall through spoiling the pretty appearance. Compost heaps really need sun to keep warm and need to be warm to compost efficiently- if this means the compost heap needs to be situated prominently then this is the compost heap for you but you need to be careful how you fill it
