Unreliable product coupled with a worthless warranty
The product was finnicky to set up, but that was expected. It started malfunctioning almost immediately.About a couple of months in, we found our chickens absolutely petrified one morning - it turned out that the door was closing prematurely because the light sensor was not functioning as expected. We changed it to the timer setting. The door regularly kept jamming because the door calibration doesn't seem to function well when the motor is struggling to lift the door (please note that our chicken door is a very standard 1x1 ft pine opening - not particularly heavy nor unusual). At one point (about a couple of months in) the thing stopped working altogether and we sent it to Chickenguard to look at. We had to pay P&P and it was sent back to us - we were informed that it's fine, and that the issue was that the cable had wound itself the wrong way round. We mounted it back on. It stopped functioning pretty much immediately and started displaying gibberish on the screen. We contacted support again and were told that this could happen if a chicken bumps into it. We were also advised to install extra eyelet hooks to allow the tether to travel freely. This made no difference, and the door has been permanently open. The company is currently not responding. All in all, we had the product for about four months, during those four months, I would say if functioned about 50% of the time. The company declined to replace/refund, and we were never reimbursed the P&P cost of sending the product back to base.I would absolutely under no circumstances ever buy a Chickenguard product again, nor would I recommend it.I wouldn't be so annoyed if it was cheap, but it's not. It's a high value item that I expect to work more reliably.

having had previous auto doors from a German based company that have now both failed beyond economic repair, decided to weigh up my options for an alternative.... after a couple of hours research and friends recommendations decided to go for the Chicken guard premium.... so far I am impressed with the little box of tricks, it is smaller than my previous model and has a lot more functionality built in, so no need to add extra modules for timer etc... having my chooks at the far end of the garden, the red LED flash when door is closed is also a nice little function.

Firstly, my ChickenGuard arrived on time, order was fulfilled by Amazon, so really expected it too.... My feelings are that it was delivered from Amazon somewhere outside of the UK as the box and internal instructions were written in German/French... easily solved as instructions are available from chicken guard website in PDF format, the firmware appears to be the latest version as it was updated late 2017 and instructions altered slightly over previous versions... the appearance is also slightly different to product pictures, the buttons are no longer black with white writing but a blue/teal colour with the symbols embossed into the rubber, the black panel stating model variant is also simply embossed into the plastic case and not a different colour.
To activate the warranty, there is a card included, which directs you to the chickenguard website, you simply add the warranty to cart, on reaching checkout you are prompted for personal details and serial number of unit etc, once completed, click buy (pay now), no money required and an email sent with your details and those of warranty...
installation, I would suggest removing the top of the unit and unplugging the base wires from the lid, this leaves you with two pieces, one with the motor / battery case, the other with all of the workings (front of unit), you will also need to remove the battery case which comes wrapped in plastic bag, not explained in the instructions is the fact you have to tilt the battery case slightly from the bottom as there is a retaining clip you cannot see when in plastic bag....... having already got an aluminium sliding door, installation was quite easy, positioned the string directly above the hole in the door, 4 woodscrews (supplied), hold the unit in place on your coop, probably easier to do if someone holds whilst you screw it in, there is a length of white silicone cord that sits inside the slot on the front panel, again, easy to put in and then trim to correct size... place batteries (again supplied), into the battery case, connect the case to wiring plug (looks like it should take a PP9 battery, they say at no times use one as will destroy the unit), then reconnect the 2 socket to the 2 pins on front panel, black wire at top or will reverse operation.... place front cover over the base plate and insert the four supplied screws to hold it all together, making sure they are tight, but not overtightened as you may split the plastic casing (by hand and not powertools recommended)..... you can then attach to your door, I used an overhand loop on the cord and then a small safety clip link (type used in fishing)........
to enter set up, press the centre button, it will show chickenguard and the time on the screen, press again it then shows setup wizard, press again to enter set up.... you then basically follow the instructions on screen (or from the leaflet), I found I had to recalibrate the door as it did lift slightly lower than when I had followed the set up )about 1/2 inch).... not a big issue, but something to double check when doing yours.... once basic setup is completed, you can then enter separate menu items to adjust LUX (light), time etc, what is not explained clearly in instructions is the first part of entering this menu is to press centre button, screen shows chickenguard / time, press centre button again, screen will show setup wizard... you now use the up or down buttons to scroll through the individual menu options... the main one I checked was LUX, open is set to 200, close to 80 (the lower the darker), as using the timer to open I left this alone, and LUX to close, I set mine to 90, it does get pretty dark before it closes, and once closed, you get a reassuring red flash approx every 30 seconds to tell you it has done so, you can also set to close on timer and LUX, which both parameters have to be met before closing, you can also set a delay in closing after the required LUX reading has been met.... the open timer, actually opened around a minute or two after the time I had set..... for those that have the standard box (without sensor), there is also an option to unlock in the software, apparently you can apply for a code to enable the LUX sensor which will turn your unit into a premium model... whether this function will work or maybe something they have included for future set ups like the remote control setting I cannot confirm...... the unit also has a rubber bung covering a USB port that will enable the unit to be run from the mains via a USB charger, not sure I would want to use this on a unit exposed to the elements though, but nice to have the option if mounting under a cover or internally...
To Summarise, the unit feels sturdier, and is definitely more compact than my previous model, which in all fairness has lasted around 8 years (second unit lasted slightly less), the fact the timer is built in is also an advantage, and having the ability to open / close the doors manually without removing the front cover is another bonus.... once you understand how the menu works, it is really easy to operate / setup... as said previously, I really like the idea that it tells you A, when the door is closed, by a flashing red LED B, when the batteries are getting low by means of a solid red LED..... glad I spent the extra and went for a higher quality unit, can highly recommend

To set the scene - my chicken coop is housed within a wire frame. The wire frame is housed within a fenced chicken run (6'). I have a wooden manual door on the wire frame which I open and close each day. I had a bit of trouble from Mr Fox a few weeks ago, due to closing the door late one night, so decided to purchase the ChickenGuard Premium after a fair bit of research. I also purchased the ChickenGuard Self-Locking Door.

I set the Self-Locking Door back-to-back with my manual door - so basically I now have 2 doors. The ChickenGuard Premium is set on a wooden bar about 50cm above the Self-Locking Door. Both products are excellent and were so easy to set up. The door is set to open at a set-time, but closes on a Lux sensor, so as the evenings get lighter the door only closes as it starts to get dark. You can adjust the Lux sensor settings. You can also push a button to manually open and close the door if you do not want it on a timer or Lux setting.. When the door is closed, a red lights flashes every 30 seconds so you can see from a distance if the door has closed. I would recommend periodically checking the door runners to make sure that the door does not get stuck on any debris.

To be on the safe side, I still open and close my manual door, but it is nice knowing that if I run late or forget to close my manual door, the ChickenGuard has closed automatically. I have only had it about 3 weeks, but so far I am really pleased and would highly recommend.

So far so good. Used this to replace the old German chicken door opener that some may be familiar with. Instructions were very clear and installation took 30 minutes from opening package to fully fitted and programmed door. Works fine and nice to have options of light sensor, timer and mix of the two. It’s expensive but appears worth the money. I’d never go back to not having an automatic door and this one looks like it’ll do the job for a good while.

Very pleased after a few days, it seems a very well thought out product, and of far better quality than the one I had before. The cord is of good quality.

Simple to install and configure, the instructions are remarkably good. I like that you can set the Lux at which it will open and close (separately), and it will read and display the current brightness level. You can also set a delay time so the door closes a period of time after the light level is reached.

Will update if anything goes wrong.

Bought the Chickenguard in the hope of ceasing being a slave to the daily opening and closing of the hen house. Easy to install and set up. Worked perfectly for around 10 days, then stopped working. Recalibrated the door, but didn't close that evening. Battery level still showing as near 100%. Took it off and tried to get it working indoors, batteries in, out etc. Back on the hen house and didn't work.....blue screen comes at the set close time and a single flash of the red light, then nothing. Now I can't even recalibtrate or get any door movement up or down. Blue wake up screen comes on, shows the battery level then turns off. Absolute junk!

We live in the country, which is a great place to raise chickens. It’s also home of many different predators. I used to have to go and let the chickens out every morning and put them to bed every night making sure the coop’s door was shut to keep out predators. Now, the chicken guard does that for me. It’s been great and I know the chickens enjoy being outside early too and not needing to wait for me to let them out. I had my own door that I used before buying the chicken guard and it easily attached to the tie point on the existing door. The lift motor has plenty of power to lift my door which is probably 2-3 lbs. there are many ways to configure the lift and close times. The light sensor works well, but I don’t use it because the chicken guard is in the inside and it closes to early. It was a bit more than I really wanted to pay, however now that I have it, it well worth the cost. Well built with quality parts. If you want to relieve yourself of a little bit of worry and work, buy this chicken guard automatic door lifter. Highly recommend.

    ⚡⚡⚡Terriblement parfait ! ⚡⚡⚡
