Determined to prove Helen Keller was right when she said, “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing,” Brian set off in June 2010 on the biggest challenge of his life. His plan was to ride the Pan American Highway from Alaska to Argentina to raise money for the Northampton Hope Centre. He wanted to challenge himself and step out of his comfort zone so decided to do the journey solo. Given that his motorcycle maintenance skills were zero and his ability to speak Spanish was limited to ordering beer, he expected to be tested. The journey turned out to be much, much more demanding than he ever imagined. It tested him physically, mentally and emotionally for 8 months, through 15 countries and 20,000 miles.

Whether you're an armchair traveller or a real-life adventurer - this book is for you! Charting one man's solo journey by motorbike from Alaska to Argentina, the book beckons you on board to ride pillion with Brian as he undertakes his epic road trip.
As with all adventures, it's not plain sailing and the real beauty of the book lies in the author's witty and engaging style; he creates an instant rapport with the reader as he charts the ups and downs of his journey and details the humorous and engaging encounters with the people he meets.
It's real, raw travel - the way life is when you go out on a limb, with no support crew, but a burning drive to see what life's like when you're out of your comfort zone. Brian's journey is an inspiration in so many ways - not least because he actually had the guts to get out there and live his dream.
Travel with him, laugh with him, cry with him and I bet by the end you'll be just a little bit tempted to take life by the horns and fulfil your own dream.
You don't have to be a motorbike fanatic - it's a book about travel, about life, about getting out there and living your dream. If you've ever done that, you'll know where he's coming from. If you haven't - read this book!

This book is invaluable reading for anyone mad enough or courageous enough to think of undertaking such a journey or anyone interested in reading about someone who is prepared to challenge themselves to the limit.I felt that I had travelled the route myself feeling drained and triumphant at the end, except in real life I wouldn't have had the bravery to do it myself.

Every chapter is pretty much the same. Rides for a while without telling you much about the journey, finds somewhere to stay, drinks beer.
Quite a journey, no doubt, but little information on the journey itself.
    Disappointing.

Well written with honesty and humour. Anyone with wanderlust will enjoy this book which gives a solid account of the trials and tribulations of a lengthy motorcycle adventure. Many of us barely know one end of a spanner from another but ride motorcycles and many of us dream of an adventure that takes us squarely out of your comfort zone but don't have huge financial resources to bail you out if it all goes awry so this book resonated with me. Over 300 pages long but could have easily been another 200 as it felt slightly rushed towards the end. Fully recommended though.

What a great book which is written from the heart. Many emotions are experienced by the author which make it a gripping read and make you feel like you are sharing the journey. The humour had me hooked and i couldn't put the book down. It does show that pushing the boundaries and your self limiting belief is well worth it even though the pain in doing so can be tough with lots of apprehension! Would recommend this book for anyone looking to push out of their self limiting beliefs to see how it can be done despite the many "bumps" in the road.

Love this book because it encompasses so many of the hopes and fears that normal people - not TV personalities accompanied by a film crew - experience when they step out of their comfort zones and take on a big challenge. In Brian's case I suspect the challenge turned out to be somewhat more daunting than he had expected - in part at least, because he chose to do the trip solo. Much as I love the travelogue from Alaska to Argentina, it's the people he meets and the the experiences he has (beginning with coming a cropper not long after he started) which captured my imagination. If you have a dream and you are determined not to be one of those cold and timid souls who knows neither victory nor defeat, this is definitely the book for you.

I've just finished reading this and although some parts of it are mildly interesting it's mostly just a lot whingeing and moaning by someone who can't ride for 5 minutes without stopping and carping about something. Who'd have thought that some of the poorest countries in the world might not have the best hotels?

The main reason for me reviewing this also is that at the end your hit with information that he raised £3000 for his chosen cause. So he spent 8 months on the road and managed to take them back £3000? How much did the trip cost to fund? 8 months on the road plus the bike, gear, etc. Stop pretending this is anything to do with fund raising for a charity and admit that it's an ego trip vanity project for yourself or you'd have just given the trip money direct to the charity!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story but too many F-bombs
Reviewed in Canada on 2 March 2023
Brian tells a good story about his ride from Alaska to Argentina. The first few chapters especially are a little too sprinkled with F-bombs, so I will not be able to pass this book on in good faith to too many of my riding buddies. Take those out (they unnecessarily distracted me from his story) and you have a well-written adventure. I enjoyed Brian's level of detail about the places he visited. The many strangers he met up with did not always seem to have the same riding style as Brian, and I wondered in his choices sometimes - but he did meet a lot of "characters." Brian was very open about the emotional ups and downs of such a difficult journey, and at times the reader could almost feel they were there on the road with him. The best parts were where Brian rode by himself, across some tough terrains. I hope he and Jane are happily married, and he has been able to find a place for himself in the after-journey (re-entry can be hard - I know from experience.)
