I became an airline pilot at age 49. It is now 2022 and I am still flying and have also written 6 books. In this book I explain how I prepare for a flight; what happens in the flight deck; why delays occur; what I do when I am done flying for the day and more. I also share passenger behaviors that drive flight crews crazy. My airline is currently so desperate for pilots that they're having to pay DOUBLE for many trips in open time. If you every wanted to become an airline pilot I suggest you go for it because there is a huge demand for pilots. My best selling book is, "How To Become An Airline Pilot: Achieve Your Dream Without Going Broke." I updated the book in 2021. What I have done you can do!

About the Author

My name is Robert Lawrence. I am an airline pilot. Before I became an airline pilot, I served in the military; graduated from the University of Washington; completed one semester of law school; endured a variety of unfulfilling jobs; was employed as a flight instructor; worked in law enforcement; and otherwise lived a normal life. However, when I reached age 48, I committed to becoming an airline pilot. I made the commitment because I was thoroughly dissatisfied with my paper-shuffling desk job. I craved a life of adventure. Also, I love a challenge. Becoming an airline pilot was the biggest challenge of my life! ROBERT LAWRENCE is an airline pilot, sailor, adventurer, and an author of three books. He served in the US Army 3/75th Ranger Regiment from 1985 – 86, and is a graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle. He currently lives in Southern California with his wife and two rescue cats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for all aIrline passengers
Reviewed in the United States on 21 September 2019
During my work career I flew a lot (I have achieved million mile status on one of the many airlines I flew). This book gives an interesting and enjoyable explanation of all the things that the pilots are doing while we are relaxing in the passenger cabin. I thought I knew a lot already but I learned a number of things about aspects of the flights that I wondered about. It is an interesting explanation of the things you see and hear on your flight. A great read for anyone about to fly for the first time as well as those of us who have flown a lot in the past!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Accurate Picture!
Reviewed in Canada on 14 June 2019
Robert Lawrence gives an accurate account of the life of a relatively junior (new) first officer on a major airline in North America. His writing style is clear, witty and easy to read. The action moves along as quickly as a typical day at work in a busy airline system. From details about the "passengers from hell" to technical details about his job in the flight deck to the constant reminder that "it is never the pilot's fault," he makes the reader feel up close and attached to the action.

Anyone considering a career as an airline pilot should definitely read this. If, after reading the litany of downsides (i.e., expensive training, hectic working conditions, low pay, long hours away from home in hotels) you still want to become an airline pilot, then you're probably the right kind of person to persevere through those trials until you gain enough seniority to move on to better pay and working conditions.

    A great afternoon's read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sneak Peek Behind the Curtain
Reviewed in the United States on 19 July 2021
For decades I wondered “what are the pilots doing right now” while sitting on row 25 of a commercial airliner. This book answered dozens of my curiosities, explained handfuls of my questions and fulfilled my desire when buying the book. With snippets of appropriate humor the author gives a no nonsense peek at the daily life of an airline pilot. One of the surprises to me was learning they weren’t paid until the cabin door closes after the passengers have been seated.

If you’ve wondered what sort of items were on one of their many checklists, or where pilots stay when they overnight in your hometown, you’ll find the answers here.

    Safe travels!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very realistic

Well written and concise. As an airline flight dispatcher I have ridden many cockpit jump seats with you guys and have learned much about your job. Please visit your dispatch office and see what they do also, I assure you we are not robots. You will be surprised at their depth of knowledge in almost everything you do. You will also surely be surprised by the number of flights, geographic area and number of airports they are monitoring. Dispatchers can be a valuable source of any critical information you need when things go to hell in a hand basket. Almost every pilot that has spent time with their dispatchers has come away with a new understanding of the amount of knowledge and technology we have at our fingertips to aid you in providing a safe, efficient, comfortable flight to our customers. We, like pilots also complain a lot and are like you frugal. It is often said that if it weren’t for pilots , dispatchers would be the cheapest people in the world. Note the second word in Cockpit Resource Management. The dispatcher, an often valuable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing insight to life as a pilot

I have never truly enjoyed reading until I discovered Robert Lawrence. Seriously I couldn’t put it down. As a college/pilot student, I learned more from reading this book than I have in any class at my university. He gives a detailed look at the pros and cons of being a pilot. It is both informative and humorous. I HIGHLY recommend this book to not just aspiring pilots but to anyone who’s ever been an airline passenger because it will make you appreciate everything they do. I think the most important takeaway from this book is IT’S NEVER THE PILOT’S FAULT!
