Customers have different views on the water temperature. Some find it excellent, smooth, and at the correct temperature, which is essential for coffee. - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2018Size Name: 4 in 1 Espress-autoVerified PurchaseMy trusty old Dualit 84009 gave up after 16 years faultless service so I was looking for a replacement to produce my favoured espresso hits to the same standard, I use both fresh ground coffee and ESE pods when time is short. After trialling a few other manufacturers offerings which were all somewhat underwhelming I ordered this despite the generally mediocre reviews and I am pleased to say that so far so good and I’m very impressed.
The machine is reassuringly weighty and well styled with all the functions easily accessed from the front and top, no fumbling around the back for the power switch and the water tank is a decent size too.
The temperature and dosing adjustments work really well ensuring the coffee produced is exactly how you like it, every time.
Using your preferred fresh ground coffee is obviously best, produced with a perfect crema and piping hot. My normal ESE pods also give a very satisfying espresso without the prep and mess and most surprisingly I find the Dualit and compatible Nespresso pods also give a very enjoyable espresso, the machine comes with the capsule piercing tool for non Dualit capsules, Nespresso capsules work just fine when pierced before use.
I don’t use the milk frother and live in a very soft water area so cannot comment on the steaming aspect nor the descaling requirements other than confirm that a small stainless steel milk jug was included in the box.
Assuming this machine proves reliable it will be a keeper and I am really enjoying the coffee it makes, now realising how worn out the pump on my old machine had become.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2022Size Name: 4 in 1 Espress-autoVerified PurchaseDo NOT buy. This thing is dangerous and Dualit don’t care.
Bought this machine because I wanted to buy british. Well that was a mistake! Coffee from this machine is OK, but no better than my previous machine, a £50 aisle of discovery special from Aldi. This one was £200 quid though. Broke down after a few months. Dualit couldn’t care less, when I ‘phoned them and were rude and offhand. They told me that as I hadn’t signed their guarantee form it wasn’t their problem. Obviously no lawyers! So got a fast easy, no fuss replacement from Amazon as I thought I’d jut got a dud machine. Now this machine has has gone. Smelled of overheating, as if just about to catch fire, so I switched off at the mains and it never came on again after cooling down. This time I had filled in the form in the box, but Dualit helpfully informed me that it wasn’t a guarantee and they weren’t interested in the fact that it gad broken down. Amazon again stepped up and this time I took my money back because I don’t want anything to do with a company that:
Sells goods which are not of merchantable quality and not fit for purpose.
Has no interest in improving them.
Doesn’t care enough to even listen to its customers.
Is culturally hostile to its customers
Palms its responsibilities off onto someone else
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 April 2024Size Name: 4 in 1 Espress-autoVerified PurchaseBought this as a replacement for our old machine. Easy to use and makes great tasting coffee. There is a good crema on top. Not as quiet as described but it is only when you first turn it on. Good value.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2024Size Name: 4 in 1 Espress-autoVerified PurchaseBought this to directly replace the same model we'd had for 7 and a half years. Estimate the last one made about 7,000 cups of coffee before expiring!
Tried a higher rated machine as a replacement first, but it simply didn't compare. This makes superb coffee, is solid and stylish and if the last one is anything to by, lasts years (if descaled regularly). Hoping the manufacturing quality hasn't gone downhill in the last 7 years!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 April 2016Size Name: 4 in 1 Espress-autoVerified PurchaseI bought this machine as Dualit are good quality machines, this one is heavily built, this is obviously why it costs more. The coffee is excellent, smooth, at the correct temperature which is essential for coffee, easy to clean and doesn't take ages to warm up. Considering the cost of major High St. coffee retailers this wins hands down, the range of coffees and coffee pods and teas means you can indulge yourself without leaving home.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2020Size Name: Bean to Go MachineVerified PurchaseWe bought this last year as we were feeling increasingly guilty about the number of Nespresso pods we were going through. This wouldn't have been my first choice of machine but in the end it was chosen because if its relatively compact size. This does have some drawbacks; you will have to refill the water, and empty the grounds more often than you would with a larger machine, but it's not a huge issue.
The coffee is good; very dependent on the beans used and the amount of water you choose to have per shot, but the espresso aspect of the machine worked almost flawlessly. The only time it struggled with grinding was when we used beans that felt particularly shiny and oily.
I thought that the first casualty would be the stream nozzle - it does make really good, thick, foamy milk, but it has to be perfectly clean to do so. This means that you have to take it off quite frequently. It's very stiff to remove, and I was worried that the whole thing was going to break off, but it proved to be quite sturdy.
Other than that, it has worked well, except for the software getting a little confused from time to time, and the touch sensitive buttons not responding. This is always solved by being switched off at the wall and restarted. The other issue is cleaning; automatic bean to cup machines seem really clean and effortless, but really, all the mess is just happening on the inside. It does benefit from a proper brush out every couple of weeks by removing the magnetic door on the side and taking out the filter assembly.
Unfortunately however, my machine died during lockdown (to be fair, it was getting used 5 or 6 times a day, every day). The steam nozzle stopped working - it was reduced to a trickle, with the majority of the steam coming out of the vents on the left hand side. Typically, the warranty period had just ended, so I've had to send it back to Dualit to be fixed. It will make me slightly paranoid about using it in the future, and I would probably think twice about ordering another Dualit product now.
EDIT: Dualit have just been in touch about the repair. Unfortunately, my particular issue can't be fixed, however, because it was only a month out of warranty when I contacted them initially, they have offered to replace it with a brand new machine. I can't fault their customer service.
EDIT 2: Our replacement machine was a disaster as soon as it was out of the box. The grind adjustment didn't work at all, and it had a habit of grinding fresh beans, and then dumping them straight away without even trying to brew coffee. Honestly, we wasted so many shots! Either that, or it would be stuck in a loop where the filter basket inside would just tip forwards and backwards constantly, trying to empty out coffee that wasn't there. I got in to a routine of taking out the internal filter assembly and clicking it back in, as well as emptying old grounds, literally every time I switched it on.
It's a shame because it is a really neat design, and very easy to use, but it doesn't seem to be engineered well enough, or it's just 'built to a price'. It's back in its box, and I might send it off and see if it can be 'fixed' for a reasonable price (or even under warranty). If so, I'll keep it as a spare or bring it in to the office.
As it stands I've already bought a Sage Barista Pro to replace it.
