I’m sad to say this isn’t the great solution it purports to be.The machine itself is ugly but I can live with that. I knew that before buying it so no worries.Lets do the problems first.The child lock is an absolute pain. There are no children in our house so I would like to fully disable it. It can be disabled but it simply resets whenever the unit is switched off.The little tray supplied is flimsy and very poor quality. It’s awkward to use and I doubt will last any reasonable length of time. (A quick update - one hook has since broken off. It lasted all of 3 days)Filling the tank is really awkward. The problem is caused by the filter. The tank is 3 litres which is good but the water flows slowly through the filter so it backs up. No problem, the tanks has excess capacity to cope with this you might think - but no. The idiot who designed this has put two large “overflow” holes a small distance above the 3 litre level so it floods the worktop if you put too much in . . . even though its not too much. Bizarre.The water quantities are ok, select what you need and you can add more or stop early. That’s ok.The temp setting is ok too. A good selection but . . . there is a but.The water flow is little more than a dribble on “Boil”, it’s painfully slow and will test your patience.Ok temps. This is the death knell for this machine. For boiling you get 90C in the cup, with a kettle I measured 96C (Thermapen). The lower temp settings were generally off by 5C. Temperatures - the whole point - are bad.I measured the kWh of boiling 500ml in this and the kettle. The cost was about the same as you would expect but the kettle was about 15 seconds faster.The benefit comes with only boiling what you need. I get that. But, the cost at the government cap of £0.34 for a kWh, for the 500ml to boiling was about 2p. You would have to do an enormous amount of overfilling to recoup the cost of the unit (I paid £104).So, ok it’s marginally cheaper on electricity but only marginally - except for one other thing. It’s less convenient than a kettle because it’s much slower and filling it is more awkward. You can only dispense 1 litre whereas my kettle can dispense 1.7 litres per boil. It’s bulky, it’s ugly and theres the support tray and child lock annoyances.One more thing about power usage, when my kettle is plugged in and not switched on - it draws zero power. The Aurora however draws a minimum of 0.3 W all the time it is connected to the power. Over a year, that will mount up and erode any saving made from removing the overfill.IMHO, this is simply junk. It isn’t going to save you anything and your kettle is faster, more convenient and will cost a lot less.Update.Well, my machine arrived on Monday evening. By Thursday evening, a tray tab had broken off. I contacted the company’s Customer Support and they are sending a replacement.In the meantime, I have repaired the broken tab and stiffened both. The process is simple if you have a 1.5mm drill, a paper clip, some superglue and a file. Firstly I glued the broken tab back on. Then drilled vertically down the post, popped in some superglue and then a piece of paperclip wire moving it a bit to ensure the glue was well distributed. When dry, I filed it smooth. We’ll see how it goes, although I have a back up on the way.Another update. I’ve added a video of the machine set to boiling and delivering 1 litre of boiling water. Whilst I did indeed get a litre of water - the temp was around 75C. Just get a kettle. Junk.
