About Us

The Berkley story is deeply rooted in the idea of the American Dream. It's about hard work, struggle, and tough times. And it's about building partnerships to accomplish goals. Still, the story of Berkley is much more than the story of Berkley Bedell. It's also the story of dedicated co-workers and loyal customers, who were equally willing to take risks.

It all began in Spirit Lake, Iowa, in June of 1937, when 16-year old Berkley Bedell took 50 USD from his paper route earnings to start a business selling his hand-tied flies to fishing tackle shops and vacationing anglers. In his upstairs bedroom, with hair clipped from the family dog, Stubby, and feathers from the backyard chickens, young Berkley crafted flies to entice local bluegill and bass from their underwater cover. The Berkley Fly Co. was founded.

By the time Berk graduated from high school in 1939, he was employing several area girls who made flies, silkworm gut, and cable wire leaders in their homes. The business soon outgrew Berk's parent's basement and living room. He expanded to the second floor of the local grocery store, using a tub filled with ice and a fan for air conditioning.

After attending the state university and serving in the Army Air Corps, Berk returned to Spirit Lake in 1945 to start Berkley and Company. The business focus was on its cable wire leaders. One evening, while reading Popular Science, Berk learned about a Connecticut company that was producing nylon-covered cable for sailboat rigging. After visiting their plant, he began to work on nylon-coated wire for use in fishing leaders. production began in Spirit Lake. Shortly after this, the distinctive Berkley heart logo was designed with the slogan "nylon leader with a heart of stainless steel."

Berk next became interested in extruding nylon monofilament fishing line. At that time, all nylon came from DuPont. After receiving a license from DuPont, Berk returned to Spirit Lake to begin work developing equipment to produce nylon. The initial extrusion equipment consisted of reclaimed washing machine wringers, bicycle wheels, and other homespun materials. Soon Berkley was marketing private brand mono as well as Dew Flex monofilament. Ongoing experimentation would soon yield the company's breakthrough innovation - Trilene.

In 1959, Berkley introduced Trilene at about the same time DuPont introduced Stren. To help introduce the new line, Berk sent out thousands of sample spools of line and asked store owners to have their best fisherman try it on a spinning reel. Fishermen loved the line and it began the successful launch of Berkley Trilene.

The next four decades were a time of great growth for the company. In the 1960's Berkley entered into the rod business, which lead to international expansion in the 1970's. Soft plastic baits made an appearance in the 1980's. The 1990's through today have seen significant technology improvements in all of the Berkley products. From the beginning, Berkley has committed significant resources to research and development - a continuing strategy that has resulted in countless product innovations, including Berkley Trilene, the Lightning Rod, PowerBait, FireLine, and more recently Gulp!? and Gulp! Alive.

Just had to replace mine today after getting a couple of really good years of use out of it. The rod looked great and fished great up until I landed a decent-sized catfish while using 6-pound test line despite the rod having a maximum line rating of 4 pounds. Likely would have been fine, except I made the mistake to pulling the flathead catfish up and out of the water using the rod instead of handling the line myself. The rod snapped between the second and third eyelet. I had it paired with a KastKing Royale Legend Glory 1,000-size spinning reel, which is a great combo. They look like they were made for each other. I must admit, though, that I replaced it with an Ugly Stik Lite Pro 5-foot ultralight with a maximum 6-pound line rating and two more eyelets. The Cherrywood HD 5-foot ultralight is great for panfish, but I do catch bigger fish fairly often while fishing for bluegill and crappie. The Berkeley is a bit overmatched by the occasional oversized fish. So I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

I was somewhat apprehensive about ordering this after reading other reviews about the tips breaking easily. Mine came straight out of the box with a broken tip! My advice, don’t buy these Rods! They’re obviously constructed out of incredibly brittle cherry wood material.

This rod is perfect for what it is! The price is Amazing. It's classy looking. the cork handle is great. The eyes appear to be all metal, so maybe they'll corrode but I'm planning to take good care of this rod.
It's whippy enough to toss maybe a 3/4 oz lure or sinker, and stiff enough to hold up to a decent sized fish... anything my kids and I would come across in the creeks, rivers, ponds, marshes we fish in. No way the fish isn't breaking the 4 lb line before the rod snaps. I would put maybe 8 lb line max on this. I think you're taking a risk anytime you ship a rod, which is definitely subject to breakage, but mine came well-packaged and not damaged.

Thank you so much for being a company with Integrity. That's so hard to find these days. I love your cherrywood rods.

So far, so good. I Love how light the pole is!! I have it paired with an Okuma Avenger baitfeeder 25 series, so together it weighs less than a pound making it easy to fish till the bait runs out. I don't place my pole in a pole holder, I like to feel the line 100% of the time, so being light to hold in my hand all day is the most important factor to me.
I've only caught a few fish with this rod so far, but I like the feel of this rod. It is so sensitive that I can feel the live shrimp bait swimming.
I bought the 7", 2 pc, medium rod, so it is stiffer than the medium lightweight rod I normally use, but the stiffness allows for a great cast.
    I surf-fish 70% of the time, and 30% backwater.
I did see a couple reviews elsewhere where people complained about the pole breaking. In my experience, when rod blanks are made of Carbon Composite, they do break easier than 100% fiberglass rods, but that is the price to be paid for a lighter rod. So, it is very important to set the drag properly in order to avoid a rod break.
Cosmetically, the rod is beautifully perfect, the epoxy coating is very smooth across the whole rod. The reel seat is made well, feels very sturdy, and the hook holder is a nice plus. I don't understand why any rod would be manufactured without a hook holder!!
Then, when you consider the price factor, you can't go wrong, HANDS DOWN!!
I will catch the same amount of fish with this $25 rod as what someone with a $200 rod. Personally, I will never, ever spend $200 on any rod, especially after using the Berkley Cherrywood HD!!
My rods are usually retired due to stupid mistakes like caught in a car door, or someone steps on the tip. So, replacing a well made $25/$50 rod isn’t as frustrating as replacing a$200 rod!!
I think my next rod will be the 7" 2pc, Berkley Lightening Rod because I like feeling the rod blank in my hand, behind the reel seat (Suspended Reel Seat) rather than holding the cork. My other rod is an inexpensive 7"6' Med/Lightweight Eagle Claw which has a Suspended Reel Seat which I have grown accustomed to.
All in all, you can’t go wrong with this rod!
    Kudo’s to Berkley!!
Shipping was fast & packed well.
