Great for extended power outages

Great for extended power outages
We have 3 Yeti's - started with a 400, then 1000, and now a 1500X. After we installed solar (we skipped the expensive Tesla Powerwall option but still saw a need for batteries), we wanted a way to keep key circuits like our fridge, Internet, and bedroom running for at least 24 hours. Doing the calcs, I determined we'd need 5 Tanks to keep us going for at least 24, probably much more. So far we've had 3 power outages, one that lasted 14 hours, and we made it through just as expected. Highly recommended.

So I received my expansion kit and noticed it also came with the link. In the question and answer section someone said it came separate but if you buy the expansion kit with 2 tanks, the link is included. It’s possible that it comes separate if buying only 1 yeti tank by itself which they could have explained better cuz even Amazon was unable to tell me if it came with it or not? Therefore, I called goal zero and they said it did come w link if I’m buying the kit which comes w 2 tanks. I hooked up everything without any issues as it’s all pretty user friendly. The only thing I was a little concerned about was how to hook the 2 Yeti lead acid tanks up to each other and also to the unit. Of course, it seemed obvious that the female connector of tank A (the one directly on right bottom of my solar generator) attached to the male connector on tank B ( the tank on bottom L side of my generator ). Additionally, to connect your tanks to the unit so that they can be charged you must plug in the male connector of your tank ( assuming you have both under the unit, one on right and one on left, connect the one underneath the right side of the unit with a male end to the r/s back of the solar generator that’s designed for it to fit. You have to push it in kinda hard to ensure it went in all the way, Unfortunately I didn’t want to take chances and have a fire so if your not sure call Goal zero direct and their techs can walk you through this part in case you get fearful since directions aren’t very clear on this. Overall I was very pleased at how easy it was, but wish they had a video on YouTube or on site showing someone physically connecting the 2 yeti expansion tanks together but didn’t see anything so read all carefully and call them if you still need guidance. As a side note, and as a word of caution, and in case your really not sure about what you might be doing Just never connect the male of let’s say tank A ( if buying one tank only) to the female plug end of that same tank. I’d think this could cause it to blow up if you do? Not sure why anyone would do that but anything’s possible if unsure so always call goal zero if your not sure. Once all was connected up on my unit the green lights on the link all lit up, telling me the tanks were full. If only one lights up it means 25% or 2= 50% full etc. Read carefully how to place link in car mode or tank mode depending if your using car generator to try charging it. Since my solar generator showed 98% full on the display, once I connected tank to the back of the link, the energy in the 2 tanks began filling up the remaining 2% requirement for solar generator to reach 100% full. If you use the Goal Zero app to connect your phone to the unit you can choose charging profiles and whether you want the unit to fill up all the way or to drop to 90% and stop at 95% etc… so as to help preserve the battery life longer depending on the profile you select. Overall this is a very good product and well worth your dollar. It adds 2400 more watts to whatever your portable generator has.

Overall very pleased with the design, integrates very well with a GoalZero Yeti 1000x. The main reasons for giving it 4 vs 5 starts is cost compared to competitors (hopefully that means longterm quality?) and the poor integration with Solar recharging. The power input on the battery charging module should be equal to or at least capable of supporting similar solar charging panels (300W minimum) as the Yeti, but it is extremely limited, which makes charging the entire system (yeti and tanks) during prolonged outages difficult from solar.

I've found a workaround via buying the 12vDC socket car charger adapter plug that into the Yeti 12v output, then plug that into the tank charging port, while solar plugs into the Yeti, so that you charge the yeti and tank at the same time, looses a LOT of efficiency, but does work if you've got a sunny day and 300W plus of panels.

The Batteries weigh 70lbs. each. The provided directions were not very clear on how to connect the Batteries to my Yettie 3000X, but their "Customer Support" was very good and helped me a great deal. The Dual Battey pack is on the right side of the Yettie 3000X. I double stacked the batteries.

Solid product. Reliable. High market penetration. This is a good way to expand your battery backup. Lead acid batteries have some overall limitations but there are many discussions about this and this product does exactly as advertised. I like the construction and the form factor.

I got this today and installed the module in my 1000x and plugged in one of the two tanks. I saw a full charge on the modules LED indicators but nothing changed on the 1000x display. I ran the 1000x all the way down and the power from the tank never kicked in even though the module showed a full LED bars. I took the module out and installed it in another 1000x I have with no change in results. I plugged in a different tank and the same thing. I reset the 1000x and the module, no change. All I can conclude is the module isn't communicating to the 1000x via the micro-usb cable. I think I have a bad expansion module. It is Saturday so I have to wait till Monday to talk to someone in Goal Zero tech support. So far the tank expansion is not living up to expectations for me.

I added this to my Goal Zero Yeti 3000x. Took about 10 minutes to install the link and then hook up the tank batteries. Everything works great.
