- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020I have many sander combos and needed to replace the grixxly 1" that died after 5 years. Chose this becasue of the larger motor (3/4hp), variable speed, and the fact the machine is a bit larger than most and puts the 6" disc sander further away from the belt (gets less cluttered/cumbersome). There are plastic parts but mainly the gurads on the belt side. Its well built and pretty quiet. Definitely worth $130-165.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2024The idea of being able to slow it down is a great but like many other reviews, It gets very hot. Most people use these for knife sharpening, so the disc sander is just in the way. Curry Custom Cutlery on youtube has a video on removing the disc sander but price seems a bit steep for just a variable speed belt sander. I feel there are better options for less out there.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2024The sander worked fine unfortunately I had to return it because it didn't work out for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2023Cutting to the chase - not a great tool, but adequate. I got on sale. Not sure if it's worth more than about $100 under retail.
Came with chip out of metal housing under disk. Obviously cheap "pot metal" from how the chip looked. The support from the disk does not tighten well - tightening deflects it so very hard to get square. This rest also deflects easily even when tightened way down. I cut some "washers" from milk jugs to shim out the rest slightly and added extra lock washer and washer each side - much better. So why don't they supply these / set up this way from factory? ... because it's not a 5 star tool. Oh yeah, and was missing a washer - fortunately I have washers out the wazoo.
Moving to the belt side ... Screws that hold on housing over belt strip easier than expected - be really careful, machine screws felt to be very soft metal, should have used higher quality. The belt that came on mine vibrated all over. It wobbled like crazy. It cut into the housing of the tool. It appears the belt is slightly mis-shapen as other 1x30 belts I had did not do this. Table on the belt side is a but cumbersome to adjust - placement and function of lock-down are poor.
The variable speed does work adequtely. It does sand. I found no other VS 1" belt sander for <$1000. So if you REALLY need a VS 1" belt sander, this is an acceptable option. However the look, feel, and my experiences above put this in the category of harbor frieght tools. It is a FAR cry from the quality of my Jet, Delta, DeWalt, shopfox, in my shop. I think the Rigid and Craftsman tools I have even beat this one. I do have some Rikon in my shop - a lathe, dust filtration, and large bandsaw and i'm happy with all of them. However, this tool REALLY changed what I think of Rikon for the worse. Very second class but still carried a top tier price tag at regular price. If you don't really need variable speed, the Harbor freight 1" fixed speed that I see go on sale for 1/4 the price or less (and I feel roughly the same quality w some parts slightly better, some slightly worse) would be a far better value for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2024wow, i love this thing, it replaced an older "Harbor Freight' PRC sourced, junk. this one runs SOOO much smoother than the old one, i'm amazed but you get what you pay for, in this instance.
