- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2022Reviewed many 4cycl gas edgers and opted for this McLane model. Assembled it in less than any hour, added oil and non ethanol fuel, and started it in the 2nd pull. The controls are intuitive. My only complaint is that I wish the handles were longer because I am 6'6" tall. I have a 400' driveway so that's is 800' of edging. It had never been edged so I made 3 edging cuts as sod had grown over into the driveway. My next edging will be like cutting warm butter. I found this edger to be easy to move and maneuver. But if you set the cutting depth at its deepest setting, it will act like a self propeller to pull you forward. Expect that so you hold on. Which reminds me that the hand grips are way to small for me. I am looking for bike handle grips that will give greater diameter for those of us with big hands. Also I will probably add a water bottle holder to the unit and a tool holder so I can clean out the blade guard that gets clogged with sod while using the unit. There is no blade line on the unit so you have to develop a sense of the cutting edge. I will be adding a paint line arrow as a guide for me. I will be ordering another blade with 3 cutting edges instead of just 2 just because I think intuitively that 3 edged blade is superior to just 2. If the handles were just 4 inches wider, I think the unit would be easier to control ergonomically and tire less on the upper body. I burner myself on the muffler housing after my first use. The cover is black. It would be a safety enhancement to have a metal plate in bright yellow as a warning. It also would be nice to have a procedure decal on the deck. But overall I am very pleased. This is not a plastic or synthetic rig....it is metal and strong. It is expensive. But I think that I can self service the unit every Winter myself. Lastly, one great feature is the ability to change the blade angle to run parallel to the ground....making this a weed eater tool also. Highly recommend after 3 days of use. I edged my front flower beds by changing the blade angle to 70 degrees to the right. I can now mow my flower beds up to the edge with my Cub Cadet riding mower. Love it. I have 4000 sq ft of flower beds on 2 acres. A great tool!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2011McLane 101 9-Inch Gas Powered Lawn Edger after buying a craftsman edger and paying $340.00, it ran great 4 times, on the 5th time ran for 20 seconds then quit. took it back to sears they talked me into trying another machine, same thing happened with the 2nd one, took it back they said they would have to fix it.so they did. it lasted for about 6 uses then started backfiring then quit, took it back to sears they said they would have to fix it again. finally got my money back after buying another sears edger. then canceling the order before it came in. I will never buy anything again, before doing research.I read the reviews on the mclean edger, the good ones, and the bad. they must have changed the throtle problem, you not only can operate it from the handle it also has a lever on the side. after doing the research i found out there are about 500 briggs and stratton motors out there. the 101 from amazon.com $299.00 comes with the 550 series. built much like the honda, has an over head valve.the machine got to my house the day they said it would, took about 5 days, free shipping, put it together in about 20 min, added the correct oil 30sae, that i had to buy from ace hardware,( im not crying that i had to buy oil) and the right gas high test nothing over 15% ethanol, the only reason it did not start on the first pull, is because i did not see the kill switch below the throtle (nice feature.) the machine is heavy because it is made out of steel, not all plastic like the one from sears, but is very easy to use, and does a great job,im very particular, i have the nicest lawn in my neighborhood. make sure you get the 101 model not the 801, the 801 model the engine hangs down and get hung up in the grass, as i found out from a 30 yr employee from Mclean, thanks mclean for still building good machines in the good old usa.( Happy 4th of July) and thanks amazon for selling them..........JohnnyO
