- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2019Unboxed and setup the RockyMounts Backstage rack tonight. The rack was well packaged and arrived unscathed via UPS. I will be using this with a 2002 Chevy 1500 HD and a 2017 KIA Sorento. For the inital setup, I fitted it to the KIA.
Setup was a breeze. The majority of the rack comes pre-assembled and it only took about 30 minutes to get through the entire process (I did watch several videos on setting it up and operating it so I was well prepared once it arrived.)
It fits well on the KIA and unlike others, I can roll into and out of my garage with the bikes loaded on the rack. However, even with the anti-wobble pin installed the rack did seem to want to wobble back and forth a bit. I don't think this will be an issue, though. I don't plan to use the swing away feature when fitted to the KIA because the hatch clears the bikes when the rack is tilted down. I will be using that feature when fitted to the truck, however.
The RM website specs this rack to be used with bikes up to 49" long. My Scott Genius 920 (29er) is 48" long and you can see in one the photos how far it hangs off the wheel cup. The front wheel is stopped with an integrated wheel stop so it can't go any further off.
While I was waiting for the rack to arrive, I almost bought a set of the metal locks instead of the plastic ones this rack ships with. I was pleasantly surprised to see the more expensive metal locks included in the box already. I'm glad I didn't order the additional locks.
This rack is big and heavy so plan on reserving a fairly large area in the garage for it. I'm waiting for RM to get the wall hanger back in stock so I can get it out of the way. For $20, they should include that as part of the package!
Overall, this is a well-built, sturdy rack. I'm looking forward to years of use!
UPDATE: I've been using this rack since August 2019 with no issues. Everything has held up well including the straps and the hook/trigger for the front wheel. Don't be mislead by the top negative review from the guy dropped his bike because the hook/trigger didn't secure the front wheel. This rack is NOT designed for bikes with front fenders and his pictures clearly show metal front fenders on his damaged e-bike.
On a side note, I'm considering converting it to a non-swing away rack by replacing the base. RockyMounts customer service confirmed it's doable using either MonoRail or SplitRail LS bases. I just haven't used the swing away option as much as I thought I would.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2020I get deep discount on many of the major brands but chose to pay full price on this rack because it had the features I wanted and liked. After using a friends, I was sold! The full swing away, allowing me to still drop my tailgate, and the ability to manage a wide range of bikes and a high load capacity...it was a no brainer. I look forward to using this rack for many years to come.
The reason for the 4 stars and not 5: One downside is that the rack arrived in the packaging with a bent component brand new... but in contacting Rocky Mounts directly.. they've been super easy to work with and are sending me a replacement part. Minor detail, easy fix.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024UPDATE: After exactly 2 ½ month of ownership, I almost lost my bike because of this rack. I arrived at the trailhead only to find my bike laying horizontal across the back of the rack, with only the back tire strap holding the bike onto the rack. Sometime during my drive that day, the arm that clamps down on the front tire FAILED. The blue button on this arm decided to not “spring into place” & allowed the “J-Shaped” piece to move freely up & down the arm. (See pic I sent to Rocky Mounts.) When this failed, my bike fell over into a horizontal position & luckily was not damaged. I immediately contacted Rocky Mounts to request a warranty replacement of the part known as the hook & trigger assembly. Rocky Mounts replied fairly quickly to tell me that it was a known issue, & that during manufacture, the bolts in the hook & trigger assembly were made too tight, causing the spring to not move freely as intended. Their solution was to tell me to loosen the bolts on the hook & trigger assembly to free the spring up. This did seem to work (that is, it freed the spring up, thus freeing the blue button to work properly), however, I now ALWAYS use two 1” nylon cam straps (one over the front tire & one over the rear tire) EVERY single time I use this bike rack. Using the two nylon straps gives me peace of mind knowing if the blue button ever fails again, I have added a second method of holding the bike on the rack. (See picture of the part that failed.)
Original Review: I do like this bike rack a lot, but having used it now for about 30 different biking trips, over approximately 2,500 road miles, I have some minor issues. When my bike(s) are on this rack I can drive without really worrying about them, knowing they are making it to my destination without falling off. The rack is very sturdy, however, even using an anti-rattle hitch stabilizer the bike(s) will rock back & forth (while the shaft of the rack itself remains solid with no movement) - meaning the "play" is in the body of the rack. I do laugh to myself that the name ROCKY Mounts is somewhat fitting, because the bikes definitely do ROCK. I have spent many miles watching my bike(s) in my rear camera while driving & the slightest bump or expansion joint in the road causes them to rock back & forth. The rack is also very heavy to handle - but I suppose that goes along with the overall sturdiness & reliability of the rack. I do love the included security locking cable - even though the instructions say it's not intended for use while traveling, I do use it while driving & it has not harmed the paint on my bike(s). My biggest issue (SEE PIC) is that when the bikes rock back & forth the arm that clamps downs the front tire rubs the fork of my bike(s). This rubbing occurs no matter how hard I try to tighten this clamp down arm because there is always a tiny amount of "play", meaning this arm does not clamp down 100% solidly on my front tires. This rubbing has caused the paint on both sides of my fork to rub off. My bike(s) cost slightly under $2K each so they are not the most expensive bikes out there, but still, I like to keep things nice & the paint rubbing off is bothersome to someone like me who is very fussy about keeping things looking nice. I think I'm going to buy some 3M reflective tape & nicely wrap it around the area of the fork being rubbed to prevent additional paint from being rubbed off. Yes, I would buy this rack again - it's benefits do outweigh the issues. I know my bikes will not fall off during transit. So a little rocking motion (with every bump in the road) & a little rubbing off of the paint are the price I'm willing to pay to make sure my bike(s) get to their destination safely. I can deal with the weight of the rack because I will only be removing when the winter snow arrives - otherwise, it will be on my vehicle year round because I ride several times a week.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023I've been using this backstage rack for over 7 months now. I've traveled all over the country and on some forest roads. It held up like a champ with no swing or sway. I did add a hitch tightener for extra insurance. I do wish that Rockymounts had a single bike option with the Backstage. I only carry one bike and it would be nice to have a rack that didn't stick out as much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Formidable... j'ai 1 vélo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product! Very Sturdy.
The product is so sturdy and a great design, plus it reasonably easy to put together. We have a four inch tire electric bike and my Mountain bike and there was minimal sway when driving. We now have access to the back of our Ford Transit connect, without having to take off our bikes. It arrived on time and the packaging was outstanding. Highly recommend this product!!
