    A Pebble Owner's Perspective
    5 out of 5 stars
    A Pebble Owner's Perspective
This is generally a watch designed for the uber-sports guy/girl, but I'm not. I do some open-water swimming and general workouts, but I'm no triathalon guy running 20 miles with sensors all over my body. I'm pretty much a lazy bum who sits in front of a computer all day. So why the fenix??Well, my last watch was a pebble steel. This is truly the closest comparison. I've been through several, most recently the fitbit ionic (which I returned after a week). Here are the priorities:1. Always On. Sorry apple watch people and ionics, etc... If I've got a kid on one hip and a bag of groceries in the other, I don't want to be doing some weird flex/gyrate to get my hand in the right position to see the time. I want to glance down at my wrist that's already facing me and see the time. You'd think this isn't a big deal, but next time you look at your watch, bring it up level, close your eyes then roll it towards yourself and open your eyes when it's facing you. It's a slight pause but that's what you get with a watch that isn't LCD. Sure, it's pretty when it's on, but seriously? I want the time or the text, period.2. Sunlight. The Fenix/Pebble use a color LCD screen. In the sun it's even more bright and crisp. At night, it's dark, but it has a back light, just like the apple watch or fitbit ionic does, where you have to roll it towards yourself, or pick it up just right (except it's much more adjustable). Like most people, however, I don't hang out in the dark all day. When I'm out and about, I want to see the time/texts3. Readability. The Fenix/Pebble let you read the entire text or email. I don't know why, but the ionic didn't let me see anything but the date, part of the subject and who it was from. The fenix lets you see that and then read the rest if you want. (like the pebble).4. Connectability. The Fenix/Pebble both maintain a solid connection. With the ionic, I had terrible trouble keeping it connected. I had several others that were even worse, but cost less than $100, so I can't compare.5. Interface. The Fenix/Pebble are button nav. This is a 2 way street, but think carefully about your life here. I happen to swim, meaning my hands are wet and that isn't good for touch screens. I go to cold places where I have gloves on, and that isn't good for touch screens. It took some getting used to, but after a week or so, I could navigate around the Fenix even faster than the pebble. It's very snappy and you can reach various items from more than one direction. Pretty cool.6. App Store. Both the Fenix and Pebble have custom apps made by both Garmin and independent programmers. It's not nearly as large a selection of programmers, but I think it's coming up. Ionic actually uses a javascript/typescript base for it's app, so my guess is that their app-store will grow quite faster, but I think the hardware itself has some problems that a software fix isn't going to help. The Fenix has a bunch of cool gadgets that I'll never use, but it's cool to have them. If you bike or hike or do things where you need to track your GPS location and altitude and heartbeat.... the Fenix does it all. For me.... meh.Oh.... and just a note again about the #1 issue of "always on". Look at the pics I have posted. It's me at work with my hand on a keyboard. If I'm coding away like the geek I am, and I get an email, I want to glace at my wrist and see if that's something I can ignore and just move on without even stopping typing. If you're a coder, you know exactly how debilitating it is to take your hands off your keyboard to check something or even switch over from whatever app you're coding in to your email..... even if it's just a few keystrokes.... you lose your flow.

I had two fitbit charge, and then I bought the versa the week it came out when my fitbit had broken a few weeks earlier. When my versa broke - I knew one thing - I was done if with fitbit if I could get my data off their system. I worked the data problem out and thought I would just buy the new iwatch that came out a few weeks before. The iwatch 5 seemed to have worked out many of the earlier issues or limitations and it seemed like a no brainer until my son in college told me that you had to charge them every night...what? How do I track sleep? That is a pain, after the fit bit I removed my clock radio and keep my watch on virtually 24 hours a day. Well back to the web for research. My dogs are on the garmin alpha 100 system, so I looked at garmin and noted that I could track my dogs with the Fenix 6, but as I read I just wasn't sure - the model I was looking at with the sapphire bezel was $900 give or take. Back to the iPhone, back to the garmin, even back to the fitbit website. Then amazon showed me this watch (Fenix 5x sapphire) - while not used to buying anything but bleeding edge tech since I was in high school this was not only out of character it seemed stupid. but then I looked at the price and thought I would much rather waste $450 than twice that. I liked the bigger size and the battery life is more than a week with everything on - and I can track my dogs on my wrist!
I have waited 6 weeks to review the watch though I pretty much knew I loved it the second day (when I finally decided I needed to sit down and actually read the manual). This watch does everything - it is big but not awkward but also means I can see the time without readers! The battery life is just awesome I actually think it is twice as good as my versa and the Fenix doesn't suck for everything else like the versa (another story though). I do know this, my next watch will be a Fenix and it will be a sapphire - as rough as I am on watches sapphire bezels are a must. Whether it is Fenix 8, 7, or 6 I really don't know - but I am happy with my sport watch for the first time in way over a year.

Aside from all the other compliments I can throw at it, the watch updates better than fitbit, is far more accurate - the pulse coincides perfectly with my wifes pulse-ox meter. The data tells me much more about my day. The only thing I will miss is when I would win an award like the Chinese wall or the length a penguin walks for something, but unfortunately I have won so many of those, new ones only come about once a year. Garmin reminds me a pro tool and fitbit reminds me of a DIY'er model. Garmin is clearly head and shoulders above fitbit for serious training metrics - and while I don't need that level of excellence the precision and usefulness are absolutely a positive. There is nothing worse than data that really isn't accurate.
I like the band and the styling, but that is just icing on the cake. The display options are extensive and based on your needs I promise that you can find not one that works but the perfect watch face. The apps actually work and don't just crash like my experience on fitbit and this watch keeps perfect time without syncing with your phone every week. I just could not be happier.

I love this watch - though my review is based on only three days of use and I've sadly had to return it. The seller I purchased from (OE USA) sent me the version with EU topo maps and not the US topo maps as advertised in the description. I called them and they said the EU version was sent by mistake. I have returned it to them, they received it today, and they are sending me the US version of the watch. They were very helpful fixing the situation. There is no marking on the box to indicate that you have an EU version - you won't know until you go in and check the watch settings and see which TOPO maps were loaded. Make sure to check the map version right away just in case there is a limited return window on the product.

I have been a Microsoft Band user since the first generation and I loved all of the data the band collected as well as the integration with my phone (yeah, I'm in the minority as a Windows Phone user). I love the look and feel of the watch, but I miss seeing all of the data on the inside of my wrist while I am running instead of having to turn my arm over and look at the top of my wrist. I was concerned that the heart rate data wouldn't be as good if I wore it on the inside of my wrist so I wore it on the outside. When I get the replacement I will experiment with it on the inside of my wrist and update my review. I also really like that it doesn't have a touchscreen. I live in Georgia and after a run on a humid day, the condensation on the glass of my Microsoft Band made it VERY difficult to navigate any of the functions, and I usually didn't have a dry spot on my sweat-soaked shirt to wipe it off so I would struggle with it for a few minutes. With the buttons on the Fenix 5x, I can easily start/stop a workout with no issues in the humidity.

I was very pleased with how customizable the screens are on the Fenix 5x watch as well as the data that is pushed to Garmin Connect. During the three runs I took while I had it, I also used the Endomondo app on my phone just to compare distances and they were fairly similar, though the watch always showed less mileage than the Endomondo app on my phone showed. The difference was negligible to me so it wasn't a big deal.

I was able to get everything (mostly) working with my Windows Phone. The only functionality that was really lacking was the ability to switch songs from the watch - the only thing I could do was start and stop the music. If you are having issues getting things working with your Windows Phone (I'm using a Lumia 950XL) I highly recommend downloading Garmin Express to your PC/Mac and syncing once through the computer. I think some firmware updates were installed to the watch when I used Garmin Express that then got everything working as expected with my phone (with the exception of the music widget) on both the watch and the phone. I did (briefly) also pair my watch with Garmin Connect on my iPhone 7 and my Surface Book and it worked fine with both of those devices, too.

I really wanted to test out the mapping functionality, but if you get the watch that is not preloaded with the TOPO maps for your region, you only get some pretty high-level maps. I couldn't even see any of the streets near me on the maps - it was just the major state and interstate highways in the Atlanta area. I considered just keeping the watch and buying the US TOPO maps from the Garmin store separately, but the cost of the maps was too prohibitive, and they should have come with the watch anyway because that is what I was paying for when I bought the watch.

I also like the haptic feedback for notifications and alarms. Having a vibrating alarm allows me to wake up in the early mornings without waking up my spouse.

I used the metronome feature on two of my runs and my feelings are mixed. The first time, it really helped me pick up the pace and I ran a faster time compared to the previous day. The second run with the metronome I completely ignored it because I was running a really tough course and there was no way I could keep up. I think this is a feature that I'll use based on the course and what I'm trying to accomplish. You can set the tempo, how you want it to alert you (tone, vibration, or both), and how frequently it should alert you (every beat, once every 4 beats, etc.).

I can't wait for the exchange to be processed so I can start using it again.
